College can be an incredibly exciting time in a young persons life. bkpysicsThe last thing that a college student wants to worry about after having to pay an exorbitant tuition fee is finding even more money to pay for college textbooks. Luckily, there is a new option that costs next to nothing: e-books. Now many colleges around the country are now giving students the option to purchase inexpensive e-books. These e-books can be stored on popular devices known as “readers” such as Kindle or Sony’s PRS e-reader. Unfortunately, at this time not all colleges are on board with changing their college textbooks into the e-book versions which makes it difficult for those students who are wanting to switch over to the less costly electronic textbooks.
There are many advantages to college textbooks being switched over to e-books. One major advantage is that the e-books are lightweight and can often fit into a purse or a small backpack. Rather than having to lug around several heavy textbooks at a time, which can take a toll on the body, the Kindle DX weighs a little over one pound. One of the most popular reasons for switching to an e-book for college students is the cost. Often e-books are quite a bit less to purchase than text books. The biggest cost incurred by the students would be for the actual e-reader itself which runs around $489 for the Amazon Kindle DX. This is a fraction of the typical cost for college books during one semester. There are other bonuses to having college textbooks converted into e-books as well. For example, some of the reader devices have the ability to search the text for any given keyword saving a busy college student time when he or she is studying a particular topic. Unfortunately, colleges and universities do not see the same advantages to the e-books as many college students do.
Currently, students primarily purchase their textbooks from college campus stores. Once they are finished with the books they generally trade in their books to receive a credit in the campus store for the next semesters textbooks. Without this campus stores at colleges would have a substantially lessened income. In addition, to students who shop in the campus stores purchase other mandatory items such as graphing calculators and items that contain the schools logo. If students stopped purchasing these items then there would be less money to go into school activities and extra curricular activities.
Overall, higher learning institutions are quite expensive without the added cost of textbooks. However, if students stopped purchasing these items from the campus stores there are numerous issues that could arise that might affect the schools income negatively. As technology advances there will always be more new and exiting options for students however it is imperative that one should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of e-books before making a final decision.
